And just like any family man, Joe enjoys sharing his beloved passion with his family. In August 2017, he went with his wife, Annette, and their 6-year-old daughter, Alivia, to a fishing vacation on the Thousands Islands. This archipelago connects America and Canada by the Saint Lawrence River.

“We were driving the boat when suddenly my husband saw something weird in the water. It was a baby deer swimming in the middle of Lake Ontario,” Annette recalled.

Although Alivia was only six, she perfectly realized the seriousness of the baby deer’s situation. She was very concerned by the animal’s lack of preparation to swim in the middle of the Lake. “That poor animal didn’t even have floaties,” she highlighted.

The family knew that they had to help the poor animal or watching how the baby deer will drown in front of their eyes. “Our first reaction was: ‘We have to help this small deer,’” Annette said. Then, the family decided to follow a rescue plan.

Before doing anything to help the animal, they need to catch the deer. “He was swimming on the wrong way and we were probably about 70 feet water away from him,” Joe explained.

Noticing how unusual and unique were the circumstances that they were in, so Annette decided to take her phone and started recording. The video was simply incredible of how the family approached the baby deer.

When the boat was finally close enough, Joe leaned over the edge and managed to catch the deer and retrieve it from the water. The poor animal was clearly shaken but seemed relieved to have its hooves on solid ground again.

After being out of the water, the baby deer calmed down immediately like if he knew that he was safe. “Once the deer got up on the boat, he just hopped right down on the floor and laid there. So we covered him with a towel. He never tried to escape or shown signs of being scared,” Joe revealed.

Now that the family had the baby deer safely out of the water, they would transport him back to dry land. On their way, they did everything to comfort the poor animal.

When the family arrived on shore, some people were curious to see if Joe caught something big. However, they were shocked when they saw what he had caught from the lake. “People were asking, ‘What did you catch this time?’, and my husband shows the animal and says, ‘Just a baby deer!’” Annette recalled.

Now the next step it was to release the deer in a more suitable place for him. And it didn’t take long for them to find a perfect place. “The nearest wooded area was straight off the island, so we released him there,” Joe explained.

Although the baby deer was reluctant to leave his saviors, eventually, he chose his freedom. The animal before went into the woods, he glared for mere seconds at Joe, Annette, and Alivia. The family felt very happy to were able to rescue the deer from a certain death.
