Saved By The Bell: Then and Now
In 1988, there was a show about a teacher named Miss Bliss that transformed into the show “Saved By The Bell.” The executives must have thought the students were way more awesome than the teacher. If there’s anything “Saved By The Bell” is famous for, it’s the fact that Mario Lopez had that curly 80s mullet and was still considered a heartthrob. Also, look what happened to Screech. Fans of Jimmy Fallon got a taste of nostalgia when most of the main cast reunited for a sketch on his show! Missing was Lisa Turtle and Screech. Imagine what it’s like to be Screech right now. You can’t because it’s too much to bear. Let’s see what everyone’s been up to.
Mario Lopez who played AC Slater has been hosting a bunch of stuff, writing memoirs, and being a fitness guru. “He doesn’t age!” they all say. On the show, he was the quarterback of the football team as well as a wrestler and basketball player. The Slater role was originally written to be Caucasian and the show explained that his father changed their last name from Sanchez to Slater for military academy.
There was an US Weekly article that said Tiffani Thiessen “awkwardly reunites with Dennis Haskins.” How awkward was it? Dennis Haskin played Mr. Belding and was on in small roles. You may have seen him in “How I Met Your Mother” and “Mad Men.” They said she made a half-hearted smile when Haskins went to shake her hand on the “Today” show. This is what Taylor Swift would call “bad blood.”
Lisa Turtle was Screech’s crush on the show. She was also played by Lark Voorhies. She had a 2012 meltdown, according to Gawker. Voorhies’ mother claimed her daughter was bipolar. “She would frequently stop mid-sentence and stare off, mumbling to herself to others who weren’t there,” said the mother. Voorhies was last seen in a 2012 movie called “Little Creeps.” Her publicist said she could not be a part of the Jimmy Fallon skit because of her intense work schedule. Is she making “Little Creeps 2?”
It ain’t so bad when you can marry up in the world! That’s what Elizabeth Berkley did when she married Ralph Lauren’s nephew Greg Lauren. Think of all the clothes she could get discounted! She used to play AC Slater’s girl Jessie Spano. Berkley went on “Bethenny” to talk about her dislike of the costumes for Spano. “I didn’t like it because I felt as a young woman, just because you are a feminist, why can’t you also dress in things that make you feel girly,” said Berkley.
Tiffani Thiessen was AC Slater’s girlfriend Kelly Kapowski. She was on “White Collar.” The “Jimmy Fallon” sketch gave her the least screen time. Check your local listings for the Cooking Channel if you want to see her. A show called “Dinner At Tiffani’s” will premiere on February 25. She’ll have guests like Jason Priestley and Seth Green! Her secret for hosting a dinner party is to make your guests feel at home with alcohol.
How did he keep that big phone tucked into his back pocket in the sketch? Zack Morris, played by Mark-Paul Gosselaar, was a prankster and ladies man. In 2011, Gosselaar starred in “Franklin & Bash,” a show about unconventional lawyers who are longtime friends. He is currently on “CSI.” Speaking about Screech’s tell-all book, he said, “Everything that I’ve heard about his book is negative and I don’t remember those things. My experience on the show was very positive.”
We were all rooting for you, Screech. Dustin Diamond allegedly picked up more than 2,000 women at Disneyland. On December 25, 2014, he was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, and carrying a concealed weapon at the Grand Avenue Saloon. His book called “Behind the Bell” contained dirty secrets of his co-stars who then criticized his statements. His attorney Thomas Alberti said, “He has a very active calendar of appearances, comedy gigs and the like.” But being on Fallon’s show is a great gig!
Ed Alonzo played a diner owner who was in 20 episodes of “Saved by the Bell.” You may also have seen him in “Full House” and “America’s Next Top Model.” He apparently worked with Britney Spears for her 2009 “The Circus Starring Britney Spears” show. All eyes on him in the center of the ring just like a circus! His Twitter revealed that he taped an episode of the CW show “Masters of Illusion.” There’s a blurry pic of him holding a poor duck!
Tori Scott played by Leanna Creel was the new girl who rode a motorcycle and always wore a leather jacket. She only appeared in half of her season. Creel was actually in “The Cell,” that movie where Jennifer Lopez dresses up like the Virgin Mary and sees that horse get sliced up into pieces. Creel received her Master’s degree in film and TV from UCLA. She married Rinat Greenburg in 2008.
Leah Remini played a girl named Stacey Carosi who was the daughter of a club owner. She, of course, develops romantic feelings for Zack and they hide their relationship from her dad. Remini said, “My agents actually told me if I took the job, they would no longer represent me. I took the show because I loved the show.” Remini left the Church of Scientology and is allegedly planning to sue the church. A former Scientology spokesman named Mark Rinder said he spoke with Remini about lawsuits based on refunds.
Screech actually got a girlfriend! Her name was Violet Anne Bickerstaff. She wore pigtails and big glasses. This girl was played by Tori Spelling. She had a show called “True Tori” that displayed her husband’s cheating and her breakdowns. Mila Kunis told Conan that the reality show made her uncomfortable. “It was horrible. She had children on the show and poor thing, I just wanted to be like, ‘You need help,'” said Kunis.
Eric Dane was McSteamy coming out of steam-filled bathrooms half-naked on “Grey’s Anatomy.” But did you know he was also a boyfriend of Stacey Carosi on “Saved by the Bell?” During the Malibu Sands Beach Club episodes, he was their opponent in an annual volleyball competition. A nude threesome tape of Eric Dane and his wife Rebecca Gayheart was leaked in 2009. It starred former teen beauty queen Kari Anne Peniche.
Scooby-dooby Doo! Casey Kasem, the voice actor for that famous mystery-solving shaggy guy named Shaggy, was on two episodes of “Saved by the Bell.” He was the host of a dance contest at the max and was a character on the episode where Zack dreams of his band. Kasem voiced Shaggy for 28 years. Asked if he ever noticed the subtext of marijuana behind Shaggy, Kasem said, “There wasn’t anything like that at all.”
Denise Richards played a girl in the final episode filmed at the Malibu Sands Beach Club. She tries to go after Slater and pretends to drown so he’ll rescue her. This sounds like that Beyonce movie “Obsessed.” Richards married Charlie Sheen in 2001 and filed for divorce in 2005. Richards appeared in “Twisted” a mystery-thriller teen drama. ABC Family announced that it would not be renewed for a second season.
Jimmy Fallon played the new student at Bayside High in the sketch inspired by the show. He even mentioned Nicole Kidman and how he would maybe one day date her. Kidman never showed up! You can’t name-drop Kidman and not have her show up when you know that’s what the people want. The best parts were probably the big phones, pregnant Kelly Kapowski, and Jimmy calling out Elizabeth for stripping in her movie.
