An Ugly Backyard Hole Gets Transformed Into a Swimming Oasis!
For many the backyard is an escape from the rest of the world. You can find a place to relax and enjoy the outdoors, a place to entertain friends and a place to simply unwind. For others, the backyard introduces some difficult things to overcome. For one man, an ugly hole in the backyard would become an oasis that everyone would envy.
What started as a half dug koi pond in remembrance of his lost dog would soon become a beautiful in ground pool that anyone would envy. His initial idea was to make a koi pond to help remember his beloved dog that had recently passed. Though we all deal with grief differently, this was how he decided to deal with it. He started his plans by expanding on an already partially dug hole and expanded it into a fantastic in-ground pool.
With careful planning he began to mark out his design and to expand the hole that was already partially dug. He first dug the hole the rest of the way to support the new foundation and to meet the designs that he had completed. He then worked to map out and place drainage for the pool and to help make the base of the pool strong enough to support the water.
He then worked to secure the pump for the pool on a concrete pad to help insure it would keep position before connecting all the necessary piping. Though weather can often derail a project, he put up protection and kept going. This is true dedication and determination.
He then worked to make all the final adjustments to the design and to begin the removal of the dirt to get the pool to the proper depth. The process was long and arduous but he was able to remove the dirt and get the pool really started.
A retention wall had to be built to keep the walls of the pool from collapsing. It was necessary also to add a skimmer tank so that the dirt and debris could be easily removed from the pool. The proper mechanics had to be put into place so that the pool can stay clear and clean all year long.
The man also designed a cave or grotto style retreat in the pool for added fun. This added feature is one that is sure to be popular with anyone that decides to take a dip in this insane pool.
Most in-ground pools are made of a fiberglass insert. For those pools that do not follow a standard shape or design, there are also options that include inserting rebar and spraying concrete into the hole. This project required rebar and concrete to be sprayed directly into the hole to get the perfect shape.
Proper mechanics also need to be added before the concrete can be poured and the water discharge tank is just one example. Also, in order to make the perfect shaped cave the rebar had to be bent to fit the design. This took days and days of back breaking work to get the rebar in the perfect shape so that the project could move forward.
After all the rebar was set and the shape was blocked out the heavy machinery could be brought in to start the really hard work. It took a month of hard work before the machinery needed to complete the project could even be brought in.
The next step was to spray concrete into each section of the pool piece by piece. This process can take weeks and without a great professional company on your side, the concrete can crack and become damaged. It was crucial that a professional help spray the concrete to make sure it was the right temperature, consistency, and that it was sprayed correctly.
After the biggest part of the concrete was sprayed smaller features like rocks were added to make the pool seem more like a natural water feature rather than a manmade pool. The concrete is then allowed to set so that the water can be pumped in without disturbing the concrete.
Final touches are added to the retaining wall that helps to keep the pool safe and secure. The wall is made to look like rocks that have been placed in a particular pattern. The wall is scored and roughed up to have the texture of a rock wall as well for some added character.
Though the team worked tirelessly to make the concrete walls and retaining wall look like real rocks, actual rocks were also brought in to help make the scene look that much more authentic. These large rocks are heavy and cannot be moved by one person and had to be brought in and positioned perfectly.
After the pool was filled the final details of the cave were also completed. This is a fantastic pool that only cost around $10,000 to complete, a fraction of what it would have costed if a professional company had been hired to do all the work. He also has the added satisfaction of having done the work himself rather than hiring a contractor to do it for him.
The family’s young son enjoys some of the smaller pools that were put in so that younger kids could still enjoy it. These smaller pools are perfect for younger kids that are not big enough to play in the deeper pools.
The owner also added tons of plants and smaller features to make the pool look like something out of the jungle. The plants, smaller rocks, and other natural features make this more than a pool and more of a great place to rest and relax after a long day of work.
