15 Foreign-Born Celebrities You Thought Were American
Learning about foreigners can be so fun. Taylor Swift is still dating Calvin Harris who is a DJ from Scotland. Wait, what? Calvin Harris is from Scotland? He’s not from Los Angeles or some other place that produces a lot of DJs. Come to think of it, he’s not the only foreigner Swift has dated. There was Harry Styles from One Direction who was born in Redditch, Worcestershire. That sounds like a delicious place to live. It must be where they came up with that condiment called Worcestershire sauce that is made of barley malt vinegar and tamarind extract. These celebs are also foreign-born.
There is sex and the city. Then there is Kim Cattrall and a British city. The Guardian reported that Cattrall moved back to Liverpool when she was 11 years old and she fell in love with acting through a relative who worked for the BBC. “I didn’t want to get married and I didn’t want kids. I knew I wanted to act,” said Cattrall. She maintained close ties to Liverpool and her family there. She currently lives in New York.
If you like “Nashville” and country music shows then you might know who Clare Bowen is. She is the actress who plays the character named Scarlett on “Nashville.” But she is not from Nashville and she is not even from America. Bowen was born in Australia and lived in Stanwell Park on the South Coast of New South Wales. In an interview with CMT, Bowen opened up about cyber bullies. “People will create trolls. Basically, it’s hate through recreation,” said Bowen.
That’s right, Calvin Harris was born Adam Richard Wiles in Dumfries, Scotland. According to the good ol’ Wikipedia, he attended Dumfries High School and stacked shelves in supermarkets before he became famous. The next boy you see at the local Target or Albertson’s could be a future star who steals the heart of Taylor Swift with his electronic music remixes and Armani underwear photoshoots. He lives like an American now since he lives in a Beverly Hills compound according to Variety.
Australians do very well here. Just look at Iggy Azalea. It’s too bad about her backlash though. She won’t get to be in a new western drama pilot called “Edge” alongside a fellow Australian. Ryan Kwanten will get to star in that western which is being produced by Amazon. It will be based on a book by author George Gilman, according to Sydney Morning Herald. Kwanten was born in Sydney.
No way! Damian Lewis shaved off his iconic facial hair for the series “Billions.” He has been filming the show in New York City, according to Just Jared. He had the best of both worlds since he visited America every now and then as a child to visit relatives.
Lucy Punch was that hilarious teacher in the movie “Bad Teacher.” Remember when she said, “Shut the front door” in front of Cameron Diaz? Then she tried to steal Justin Timberlake’s character away from Cameron’s character. She had such a great American accent. Punch was born in London and dropped out of University College to become an actress. She plays a prostitute in the movie “She’s Funny That Way” and will be in the movie “The Meddler.”
Karl Urban doesn’t have much of an accent as Leonard McCoy in 2009’s “Star Trek” and the 2013 sequel to that movie. He also sounded American as “Cupid,” son of Aphrodite, in the show “Xena: Warrior Princess.” But he is actually not an American. He was born in Wellington, New Zealand. He married Natalie Wihongie in 2004 and they lived in Auckland, New Zealand. Now he’s with Katee Sackhoff and he’ll be in the third “Star Trek” movie with Chris Pine.
Ellen DeGeneres was born in America but her wife was not. Portia De Rossi was born in Horsham, Australia. In 2013, De Rossi even took DeGeneres to Australia and showed her around. There were pics of them at the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. According to Daily Mail, Ellen tweeted, “Portia’s finally getting to show me her beautiful country.” They even went on a ferry ride and saw cute koalas. That is too cute.
Tammin Sursok plays Jenna Marshall on “Pretty Little Liars,” but she is also hiding a pretty little secret about her homeland. She was born in Australia! She was involved with the Sydney Youth Musical Theatre where she acted, sang, and danced. She also got an agent in 1999 and was on an Australian series called “Home and Away” in which she played a rebellious daughter. She was in a movie this year called “Bound & Babysitting.”
Dominic West was on “The Wire.” This was an American show but he is not American. He was born into a Catholic family of English and Irish descent in Yorkshire. He also married into Irish royalty in 2010 with his wife Catherine Fitzgerald. She is the daughter of Desmond Fitzgerald, 29th Knight of Glin. Daily Mail reported that Dominic and Catherine had to sell her ancestral home of Glin Castle in April because it’s too expensive to maintain.
Congratulations are in order for one of the sexiest DJs in the world who are not named Calvin Harris. Idris Elba became the first Maxim cover model for their September fashion issue! He wears a black leopard-print funnel coat on the cover. The editor-in-chief Kate Lanphear told Racked, “We’ve never in U.S. Maxim history had a man on the cover solo. This is the very first time, and there was no one else in the world more bad-ass than Idris.” Elba is from London.
Sarah Jessica Parker is going to be in a new BBC drama called “All Creatures Great and Small.” But fans of the show “House” would be more interested to learn that she will share the screen with Hugh Laurie, who is from Oxford, England. The story is about a veterinarian and his adventures rescuing farm animals and pets in the fictional Yorkshire village of Darrowby. If you have HBO, you’re in luck since they will air the series.
Sir Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis won an Academy Award for his role as an American president in the 2012 movie “Lincoln” and he is not even an American! That’s how good of an actor he is. He was born in London to a poet named Cecil Day-Lewis and an actress named Jill Balcon. His father was also the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom. Last November he was formally knighted by Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

Sharman grew up in Hackney, London.
Theo James is in the movie that rhymes called “Divergent: Insurgent.” Of course the makers of the series had to split the finale into two parts just like “The Hunger Games.” They are such copycats in Hollywood! So lovers of Theo will get to see a lot of him and Shailene in “Divergent: Allegiant Part 1” and “Divergent: Allegiant Part 2.” Theo plays Tobias “Four” Eaton and will play the husband of Dakota Fanning in a movie called “Franny.” Theo is originally from Oxfordshire.
